Malva Pudding

Melt-in-your-mouth Malva Pudding – A South African favourite all year round! Warm, delicious and absolutely moreish!

  • 125ml Huletts Treacle Sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 15ml apricot jam
  • 250ml flour
  • 5ml baking powder
  • 3ml salt
  • 5ml bicarbonate of soda
  • 250ml milk


  • 60ml butter
  • 60ml Huletts Castor Sugar
  • 125ml boiling water
  • 125ml cream
  • Pinch of salt

Brandy Cream

  • 250ml Butter
  • 250ml Huletts Icing Sugar
  • 60ml Brandy or 3-5ml rum essence



  1. Preheat the oven to 180°C.
  2. Whisk together the sugar and the egg until they are fluffy and turn lighter in colour. Add the jam, flour, baking powder and salt, and stir in until blended.
  3. Pour in the milk, sprinkle it over the bicarb, and quickly whisk it together. Pour the batter into a greased baking dish, cover with the lid or foil and bake for about 40 minutes until golden brown and a skewer inserted in the middle comes out clean.


  1. Melt the ingredients in a saucepan. Do not allow to boil but gently heat through.
  2. Once the pudding is removed from the oven, pour over this sauce allowing it to soak through thoroughly.
  3. Serve with Custard or Brandy Cream see below.

Brandy Cream

  1. Cream the butter and icing sugar until the mixture is light and fluffy.
  2. Add the brandy or essence and beat until well combined.
  3. Chill and serve with the Malva Pudding

Top tips

BUTTER: DO NOT Microwave

Rather, thinly slice and cut into different lengths to make creaming easier.
